Olympique Lyonnais has signed Pape Cheikh Diop, the young Spanish midfielder from Celta Vigo, to a five-year contract, i.e. until 30 June 2022.
Pape Cheikh Diop, 20, is considered one of the best young Spanish footballers in his position. A member the Spanish U19 squad that won the European championship in 2015, Cheikh MADE his Liga debut at the age of 18 with Celta Vigo, and has since played in 22 matches.
The amount of the transfer is €10 million plus incentives of up to €4 million and an
earn-out of 15% of the capital gain on any future transfer.
Coming after Fernando Marçal, Bertrand Traoré, Ferland Mendy, Kenny Tete, Mariano Diaz and Marcelo, Cheikh's arrival is another step in OL's strategy of renewing the player roster with both experienced and young, promising players, whether trained at the Groupama OL Academy or elsewhere.
Florian Maurice said, "I first saw Cheikh play at the Euro 2015, which Spain won, and I have been following him ever since. He is a versatile player, able to adapt to a variety of game plans. He covers a lot of ground, has the technical skills necessary to make the link between offence and defence and can still develop significantly as a player.”
